In Brief

Sweden saw off Switzerland in the previous round. Strong defensive performance. Larsson is back after head knock. Lustig is banned.

Looking Back

Sweden overcame Switzerland 1-0 on Tuesday, winning through thanks to a goal from Emil Forsberg in the second half. It was a tight match, but overall they were the better side and merited the victory.

Andersson’s side have now won three of their four World Cup matches to date, with the exception a 2-1 reverse at the hands over Germany in their second game. That is the only match in the last six in which they have conceded a goal.

Sweden are weak at the other end of the pitch, however. Although they scored three times against Mexico, that is the only occasion since an 8-0 win against Luxembourg nearly a year ago that they have managed to score more than once in a fixture.

Looking Ahead

Sebastian Larsson is available to play after serving a ban and a head knock that he sustained against Mexico. The coach has said that he will be available for this match, and if he is really fully fit, he will likely start.

Mikael Lustig is suspended after picking up his second booking of the competition in the previous match. Emil Krafth will take his place.

Albin Ekdal was fit to play against Switzerland and will be able to feature in this clash, too.

Points of Interest

The last two World Cup meetings between these sides have ended drawn.

England

In Brief

England eliminated Colombia through the penalty shootout. Risked jeopardising their qualification after taking lead. Will have to deal with Sweden next. Alli and Vardy are slight doubts. Young and Kane should be fine.

Looking Back

England seemed to know how to block Colombia as they held a great ball possession right from the start of the match, while never risking anything defensively. Having taken the lead early on in the second half through a penalty kick, they seemed capable of controlling the game until the end but were eventually reached to a draw in the injury time. They seemed to have run out of energy in the extra times but came out winners following the penalty shootout.

Pickford turned out to be the hero of the night with two decisive saves in the penalty shootout and making an extraordinary save at the end of the second half. Kane keeps scoring: he converted both penalty kicks, in the regular time and in the shootout. Maguire played well at the back, also carrying the ball out nicely, but holds some responsibility for the opponents' equaliser. Alli lacked rhythm and did nothing good, after returning from injury.

Looking Ahead

Having managed to get rid of Colombia, England will next be facing Sweden in the quarterfinals of the competition. It was 1990 when England last made it to the semifinals.

Alli has a thigh issue while Kane should be fine after suffering from a back problem: the former is still slightly doubtful. Dier could end up replacing him in the midfield instead of Loftus-Cheek.

Lingard, Henderson, Walker and Loftus-Cheek are one yellow card away from ban.

Young has shrugged off a problem in an ankle and in a thigh, In case he missed out, he could be replaced by Rose among the starters.

Vardy has a groin issue and he is also a doubt.

Points of Interest

England have already met Sweden 23 times: on the whole they won 7, drew 9 and lost 7, scoring 35 goals and conceding 31. The two sides drew 2-2 and 1-1 in the World Cup 2006 and 2002 respectively.
