West Ham United

Last updated: Sat 10 August 2019 05:56
In Brief

Scored a lot, but also conceded a lot in pre-season. Changes in forward line this summer. Captain Noble set to miss. Fabianski passed late fitness test.

Looking Back

West Ham scored plenty in pre-season, but at same time looked all over place at the back. Conceded 2 or more in 4 of 6 friendlies, with only clean sheet kept vs. Fulham.

Departures of Arnautovic and Carroll saw Hammers signing productive in the Bundesliga last season Haller as their new main centre forward.

Looking Ahead

Coach Pellegrini seems to have settled on front 4 to start season, both newcomers Fornals and Haller expected to be regulars. Fabianski overcame hand injury on time and he is available for selection.

Captain Noble won't be fit (dead leg), with Wilshere the obvious choice to take his place.

Points of Interest

Trying to stop run of 8 consecutive defeats vs. City.

Manager Comments

In his press-conference Pellegrini hinted that this season Antonio will be reclassified as striker: 'Albian Ajeti to compete with Javier Hernandez and Antonio for that position.'

In Brief

Penalty shootout win vs. Liverpool brought Community Shield trophy. Cancelo not ready for use. Sane ruled out for long. Mendy major doubt. Fernandinho and Laporte cleared to play

Looking Back

City lifted second Community Shield in a row when edging Liverpool on penalties last Sunday. Champions dominated in first half, but poor after the break and a bit lucky to draw 1:1 after 90 minutes.

Met West Ham in mid-July in pre-season Asian Trophy match, with City cruising to 4:1 win on that occasion. Sterling scored 2 and assisted another in this match.

Looking Ahead

Coach Guardiola seems set on using Zinchenko at left-back, with Mendy unlikely to overcome knee injury on time.

Big summer signing Rodri should start too, with Fernandinho only just back from holiday and lacking fitness.

Sane taken off injured last weekend, while Laporte missed with minor strain. Latter able to return, but Sane needs surgery and could be out until Christmas. Newcomer Cancelo won't be used just yet.

Points of Interest

Ended last season on run of 14 consecutive Premier League wins to clinch title.
