In Brief

Much loved coach Benitez left in summer and start new season with Steve Bruce in charge. Paid big money for 2 new forward players. Lazaar, Aarons and Colback left out of squad. Gayle, Lejeune and Yedlin sidelined. Ritchie passed fit.

Looking Back

Newcastle defied odds in 2 consecutive years to stay up, but tired of lack of investments fan-favourite coach Benitez left in summer. Experienced, but deemed old-fashioned, Steve Bruce took charge instead.

Magpies finally opened check book this summer with Joelinton new record-signing for club. Big money also paid for Saint-Maximin. They should replace departed key strikers Rondon and Perez.

Looking Ahead

Coach Bruce keeping 5-3-2 formation from his predecessor, with main difference that he started using January signings Almiron as secondary striker right behind Joelinton.

Shelvey looked very sharp in pre-season and he seems to be back to his best form after injury-ravaged previous campaign.

Gayle, Lejeune and Yedlin long-term absentees, but Ritchie passed fit on time. Lazaar, Aarons and Colback left out of 25-man Premier League squad.

Fan-favourite Carroll re-signed with club, but as he didn't have summer preparation he is not in the mix for selection.

In Brief

Must improve away form this season in order to challenge for top 4 finish. Tierney, Mavropanos, Holding and Bellerin sidelined + captain Koscielny sold. Kolasinac and Ozil won’t travel. Elneny, Ceballos and Pepe struggle for fitness. Lacazette slight doubt.

Looking Back

Away form Achilles’ heel for Gunners for past 5 years and Emery couldn’t find remedy for poor results on the road last season. Big issue remains the defending, just 1 clean sheet in last 6 friendlies.

Spent big on winger Pepe and if nothing else going forward certain to promise plenty of threat.

Looking Ahead

Coach Emery set to use 4-3-3 formation it seems, but Pepe lacks fitness and might not be ready just yet. Same for Ceballos and Elneny.

Departure of captain Koscielny and serious injuries to Holding, Mavropanos and Bellerin expose defence even more. Strengthened at the back on deadline day - Luiz set to become key figure, but other new arrival Tierney injured for several weeks.

Lacazette has picked up minor knock recently, but not expected to miss game.

Both Kolasinac and Ozil were victims of recent knife attack and due to their stress levels manager decided to leave them back home.

Points of Interest

Last season saw Ozil making fewest starts, just 20, and playing his fewest minutes since joining Arsenal back in 2013. This trend likely to continue.
