Manchester United

Last updated: Sun 11 August 2019 08:07
In Brief

Spent big in summer on 2 new defenders in hope to improve dismal defending from last season. Bailly and Fosu-Mensah long-term absentees. Darmian and Sanchez also missing. Lukaku sold. Pogba passed fit.

Looking Back

United had dreadful defensive record last season and logically big money were spent on 2 new players for that area of the pitch, plus De Gea finally agreed to sign new contract.

Results in pre-season impressive, but most of them against weak teams and nothing much should be read based only on that.

Looking Ahead

Coach Solskjaer likely to use 4-3-1-2 formation with Rashford and Martial playing up front. Latter was most productive player in pre-season with 3 goals and 1 assist.

Pogba has back problems, plus wants to leave badly this summer, but Solskjaer insists United’s most valuable player staying. He was passed fit anyway and expected to feature.

Bailly will miss several months with knee injury. Meantime, Lukaku managed to force move to Italy and he left Manchester for good!

Darmian and Sanchez lack fitness and won't be used.

Points of Interest

Unbeaten in last 6 home matches vs. Chelsea, but 4 of those games ended in draws.

Chelsea

In Brief

Club-legend Frank Lampard replaced in charge Sarri this summer. Not much room for improvement with transfer ban in place. In shock move David Luiz left club. Loftus-Cheek and Hudson-Odoi sidelined. Kante, Rudiger and Willian lack fitness.

Looking Back

Chelsea parted ways with Sarri in summer and club-legend Frank Lampard took reigns. He couldn’t manoeuvre much on transfer market with Chelsea suspended from signing new players for 12 months.

Hazard’s departure ends an era, with Belgian relied on in tough games for years.

Struggled defensively in pre-season, conceded 8 goals in last 3 friendlies.

Looking Ahead

Coach Lampard might not risk health of Kante and Willian, both had long summer breaks and lacking fitness. Kante close to comeback, but Willian still not looking good in training. Rudiger also only just resumed training and not expected to travel + 2 others long-term absentees.

Emerson preferred ahead of Alonso at left-back by Lampard, while Abraham seems to be the likely starter up front. That said both Giroud and Batshuayi viable alternatives.

Chelsea short on numbers in defence for start of season, especially after David Luiz stunned fans with his transfer to Arsenal on deadline day.

Points of Interest

Able to keep just 1 clean sheet in 7 pre-season matches. It was against modest Irish side St. Patricks.
