Aston Villa

Last updated: Sat 17 August 2019 08:26
In Brief

Close to major upset in round 1, but in the end got tired and lost. Captain Chester long-term absentee. Hause and Kodjia also sidelined.

Looking Back

Villains very nearly made dream start to season after taking early lead on visit to Tottenham, but second-half pressure proved too much and 3 goals were conceded inside final 20 minutes.

Many positives from this first display, but also red flag concerning squad’s fitness. Everyone in Villa colours looked very tired past the hour mark.

Looking Ahead

Coach Smith has options to rotate if he wants to, with Targett pushing for start at left-back + Jota and Davis options up front.

Only serious injury issue absence of captain Chester. However, due to training ground injuries both Hause and Kodjia also won't be involved this weekend.

Points of Interest

First selection saw 6 players signed this summer starting game, which was new Premier League record.

Manager Comments

"We've captured the imagination of Villa supporters and we need to make sure Villa Park is big for us this season."

Bournemouth

In Brief

Unable to start season with win against another newly promoted side. Francis, Gosling, Brooks, Kelly and Stanislas sidelined. Lewis Cook and Danjuma also ruled out.

Looking Back

Bournemouth made disappointing start to campaign, with lack of movement in attack the most concerning thing from 1:1 home draw vs. Sheffield United. Front trio Wilson-King-Fraser were ineffective in this first match.

Used 3 at the back, which if nothing else provided decent stability in defence.

Looking Ahead

Coach Howe still heavily restricted in his selection choices, particularly in defence and midfield, with as many as 5 players out injured.

Lewis Cook only just resumed training and won’t be rushed back, also new winger Danjuma unable to overcome muscle issue on time.

Points of Interest

With 4 goalkeepers fighting for 1 starting spot the first few rounds might see regular rotation in that position.
