Southampton

In Brief

Bad defeat suffered in season-opener. Ings expected to be extra motivated for coming match. At full strength.

Looking Back

Saints were unable to deal with Burnley’s physicality in opening round and bad 0:3 defeat was suffered. Things worryingly poor down right flank of defence where Valery had very bad game.

Going forward didn’t convince either, Adams and Ings yet to build synchrony up front.

Looking Ahead

Coach Hasenhuttl yet to decide if he will stick with 3-4-3 shape or add extra midfielder on pitch for this one. If going for second option Adams likely to be left on bench.

No injury issues in squad.

Ings had 4 unhappy years at Liverpool and after resurrecting career with Saints last term he will be really eager to shine in this one.

Points of Interest

Lost 4 consecutive matches vs. Liverpool. Also scored single goal in last 5 meetings between sides, while conceding 11 themselves.

Liverpool

In Brief

Very good start to season. Clyne long-term absentee. Alisson and Keita also sidelined. Adrian and Lovren fresh concerns.

Looking Back

Liverpool solid, if not great, in 4:1 home win vs. Norwich. Going forward good as usual, but had several shaky moments at the back.

On Wednesday won UEFA Super Cup after 2:2 draw with Chelsea in Istanbul culminated in successful penalty shootout. Mane was back in Starting XI for this one and scored both goals.

Looking Ahead

Coach Klopp forced to start on goal with recently signed Adrian, that if he overcomes minor ankle issue on time as expected, after Alisson’s calf injury in round 1 rules him out for several weeks.

Gomez looked far from secure in heart of defence vs. Norwich and Matip pushes to replace him, but for now changes in back 4 might not be done.

Lovren missed trip to Istanbul sick, while Keita due to minor muscle issue and at least latter ruled out again.

Points of Interest

Salah loves facing Southampton’s defence with Egyptian currently on run of 4 consecutive matches vs. Saints in which he gets on the scoresheet.
