Chelsea

Last updated: Tue 20 August 2019 04:54
In Brief

Badly beaten by Man United in season-opener. Also lost UEFA Super Cup on penalties. Loftus-Cheek and Hudson-Odoi sidelined. Kante, Rudiger and Willian fit again.

Looking Back

Chelsea suffered bad 0:4 defeat on visit to Man United, despite being the better side in the first half of this match when the woodwork denied them twice.

Lampard’s naivety as manager exposed though as starting young Mount was bad decision and also the back 4 looked very insecure without sold Luiz to anchor them.

On Wednesday Chelsea suffered another setback in Istanbul after losing UEFA Super Cup to Liverpool. 120 minutes finished 2:2, but then Abraham missed crucial penalty.

Looking Ahead

Coach Lampard already heavily criticised for his early decisions and he needs to respond. Changing the back 4 after only 1 game seems unlikely, but leaving Mount on the bench is logical thing to do.

Kante, Willian and Rudiger involved in midweek and expected to be again.

Both Loftus-Cheek and Hudson-Odoi still in rehabilitation.

Points of Interest

Failed to score in 3 consecutive league clashes vs. Leicester – two 0:0 draws and last December beaten 0:1 at home.

In Brief

Held to home draw in first game. Mendy doubtful, but no major absentees.

Looking Back

Leicester were very ineffective going forward in season-opener and logical 0:0 home draw vs. Wolves was registered. Taking out the free spaces for Vardy to run to was crucial and again revealed major weakness in the approach Rodgers is using.

Accuracy of crossing worrying in round 1. Had most crosses that went astray in first game of all 20 sides in Premier League.

Looking Ahead

Coach Rodgers opted to leave Albrighton on bench for extra inner midfielder in Choudhury and this likely to happen again as Leicester will try to crowd this part of the pitch.

Mendy still serious doubt after missing entire pre-season, but no fresh issues.

Points of Interest

Leicester have scored 3 goals as a team in last 5 matches vs. Chelsea, all of them scored by Jamie Vardy!
