Newcastle United

Last updated: Sat 31 August 2019 08:11
In Brief

Pleasant surprise of last weekend, but on Wednesday back to negative results and with early exit from League Cup. Saint-Maximin, Yedlin, Gayle, Carroll and Lejeune sidelined. Willems, Krafth and Ritchie fresh concerns, with at least Ritchie ruled out for certain. Lascalles passed fit. Almiron slight doubt.

Looking Back

Newcastle achieved unexpected 1:0 away win vs. Tottenham last weekend, with luck helping a lot to keep clean sheet and put first points on the board.

This didn’t start positive run though as on Wednesday Magpies eliminated from League Cup after losing penalty shootout at home vs. Leicester. During regular 90 minutes Muto scored to push game further, but this wasn’t enough.

Looking Ahead

Coach Bruce might have just 1 typical full-back available for this one. All of Willems, Krafth and Ritchie sustained knocks on Wednesday and at least Ritchie out for certain, other 2 deemed 50/50. With Yedlin still in rehab Manquillo is the only full back available.

Saint-Maximin, Gayle, Carroll and Lejeune other sidelined players, but Lascalles and Almiron expected to be available after not being used in midweek due to minor bruises. Captain Lascalles cleared to play for certain.

Points of Interest

Failed to score more than 1 goal in any of last 8 matches vs. Watford. Last time able to do that way back in 2010!

Watford

In Brief

Seek first points. Much-needed confidence boost achieved in midweek cup win. Captain Deeney only sidelined player.

Looking Back

Watford started season very poorly – 3 defeats in 3 and single goal scored, while 7 conceded.

Hornets restored confidence on Tuesday after cruising to 3:0 home win vs. Coventry in what was one-sided League Cup clash. Record-signing Sarr scored his first goal for the club in this win.

Looking Ahead

Coach Gracia has only injured captain Deeney unavailable, with changes to line-up likely.

Fit-again Pereyra and Sarr are pushing for starts, with both of them impressive in midweek.
