In Brief

A rotated Sunderland side claimed a penalty shoot-out win over Stoke U21 in an EFL Trophy game in midweek. Max Power is suspended. Glenn Loovens and Adam Matthews are likely to return. Jerome Sinclair is fit again.

Looking Back

With promotion being Sunderland's one and only goal this season, it was hardly a surprise that Jack Ross opted to ring the changes for his side's midweek EFL Trophy game against Stoke U21. His men claimed a penalty shoot-out win.

The Black Cats' latest game saw them being held to a 1:1 draw by Oxford, but the result was not too bad, when having in min that they were reduced to ten men early on. Sunderland remain unbeaten in the league this season and have recorded four wins and two draws so far.

Looking Ahead

Max Power is the player who was sent off last time around and the midfielder will now serve the first game of a three-match ban.

Glenn Loovens and Adam Matthews failed late checks ahead of the previous game but are both expected to be available this time around.

Jerome Sinclair picked up an injury in the season opener and has been unavailable since. However, he is now fully fit.

Points of Interest

One unbeaten run will come to an end at the Stadium of Light on Saturday if the game does not end in a draw, as Sunderland are unbeaten in the league so far this season, while Fleetwood are yet to lose on their travels.

Fleetwood

Last updated: Sun 09 September 2018 08:34
In Brief

Fleetwood are coming from a 2:1 win over Bradford. Have been superb on their travels so far. The club appealed Wes Burns's last week's sending off, but their appeal has been rejected by the FA.

Looking Back

Fleetwood are coming from their first home win of the season, as they managed to edge out Bradford with a 2:1 scoreline. The result was rather impressive, when having in mind that the Cod Army were reduced to ten men late in the first half, with the scores level at 1:1.

The Cod Army have played their best football so far on their travels. They have collected seven points from three away games, but Sunderland will provide them with the toughest test they have had so far.

Looking Ahead

The club tried to appeal Wes Burns's last week's sending off, but had their appeal rejected. This means that the striker starts a three-match ban.

Joey Barton has named the same starting eleven in each of his side's last three league games, but Burns's suspension will force him into a change. Other than the striker, he is expected to have everyone available for selection.

Points of Interest

Fleetwood are not only unbeaten on their travels so far this season, but are yet to concede a goal away from home. Their goal difference in the three away games they have played so far reads 7:0.
