Newcastle United

Last updated: Tue 14 January 2020 09:54
In Brief

Need boost as form from mid-December onwards dipped (W1 D2 L4). Schar, Joelinton and Saint-Maximin amongst 7 sidelined players + Lascelles, Yedlin and 2 others also likely to miss. Could be using U18 players.

Looking Back

Newcastle didn’t impress much in first game vs. Rochdale, but at home Magpies expected to be much more aggressive compared to this first match.

Combination of hard schedule and injury problems saw form of team dipping dramatically in last 4 weeks (W1 D2 L4). On Saturday defended stoically for long periods during 1:1 away draw vs. Wolves.

Looking Ahead

Coach Bruce risked by starting both Dummett and Gayle on Saturday, but this backfired as both of them re-injured now and set to miss. Added to that continuing absence of 4 other players and 4 others major doubts gaffer will be forced to look at youngsters.

Almiron went nearly 12 months since joining Newcastle without goal, but he looks man transformed lately and now has scored in 3 of last 6 games, including first match vs. Rochdale.

Joelinton struggles with muscle strain and also ruled out.

Manager Comments

When asked on the chances of anybody returning: "I would think it will be an impossibility for them to be ready for Tuesday ... We will see what the Under-18s have got, see if they have any players."

Rochdale

Last updated: Tue 14 January 2020 05:46
In Brief

Rochdale rode their luck at times in their recent game against Bolton but managed to overcome the Trotters with a 2:0 scoreline.

The Dale eased the pressure on Brian Barry-Murphy thanks to two wins and a draw from their last three. They had lost eight in nine before that.

Looking Ahead

The Dale have an extensive injury list and Barry-Murphy had to name youngsters Ethan Brierley and Lewis Bradley on the bench last time around.

Barry-Murphy has not provided any recent squad updates, but none of the players who missed the previous match is thought to be missing with a long-term issue.

Points of Interest
