In Brief

Hegazi out with fresh injury. Sawyers is banned. Grosicki and Robinson cup-tied.

Looking Back

Suffered a shock and completely unexpected 1:0 home defeat at the hands of Wigan on Saturday in the league and allowed Leeds to pull within just a point of them. It brought to an end what has been a really good run of form lately and serves as a wake-up call.

Played fine football away at West Ham in getting a 1:0 away win in the previous round of the FA Cup when using most of the reserves.

Looking Ahead

Host Newcastle in a FA Cup tie in midweek which offers the chance to get into the last eight of the competition. Slaven Bilic will naturally go for a win but his plate is now full with the race for promotion and can do without the distraction of dreaming about the Cup.

He is therefore expected to name a weakened starting 11 and he is going to miss a host of players as well. Ahmed Hegazi sustained a hamstring issue at the weekend and is out for some time. Also, Romaine Sawyers is still serving a ban while Kamil Grosicki and Callum Robinson are both cup-tied alongside Lee Peltier.

Still a few long-term injuries as well as Nathan Ferguson, Chris Brunt, Grady Diangana and Kieran Gibbs remain out.

Points of Interest

The last meeting in the Cup between these sides was in 2010, with the Baggies winning 4:2 against the Magpies.

Manager Comments

Bilic: “We are really looking forward to it. It’s a big night for the club and the players individually. We can progress into the last eight, and that would be tremendous. It’s a massive game for us“

In Brief

Needed replays in both previous FA Cup rounds, both against League One sides. Form dropped post-Christmas. Willems and 3 others long-term absentees. Kraft and Saint-Maximin doubtful. Lazaro back from ban.

Looking Back

Newcastle continued to struggle in attack on Saturday when held to 0:0 home draw by Burnley. It’s exactly the lack of goals that saw Magpies winning just 1 of last 10 Premier League games (D4 L5).

FA Cup results also far from impressive so far with Newcastle needing replays against both Rochdale and Oxford in previous 2 rounds. In fact second game against Oxford went all the way to extra times.

Both Almiron and Joelinthon have 2 goals each in FA Cup and this competition in which 2 star players seem to be performing best right now.

Looking Ahead

Coach Bruce expected to rotate, but still he should select pretty strong squad. Saint-Maximin, hero from previous FA Cup round, nurses 'niggle' and might miss.

Kraft back in training and could be available soon, while Lazaro returns from ban. Still have 4 long-term absentees.
