Highlights

Juventus ended any lingering hopes Inter Milan may have had of challenging for the Scudetto with a workmanlike 1-0 home win over them in Turin. The visitors had a couple of very good chances but were eventually punished for not taking them as Mario Mandzukic headed Juve's winner just after the hour.

Detail

It was another edition of The Derby d’Italia and this was one that Inter Milan simply had to win if they wanted to be involved in the title race. They can't say that they didn't have their chances in the first half. Mauro Icardi held the ball up in the box and played a lovely lay-off into the path of Roberto Gagliardini but the midfielder scuffed a low finish against the post with just the keeper to beat.

Juventus didn't quite look themselves in the early stages and were giving the ball away too easily. Matteo Politano was causing them problems down the right and he fired a wicked low cross into the box which Milan Skriniar completely missed and then Ivan Perisic shovelled wide from a great position.

There was just the sense that the visitors were going to live to regret those missed opportunities and the signs were there as the champions started to take over towards the end of the first half. Massimiliano Allegri switched his full-backs with Joao Cancelo coming to the left and he provided a cross for Rodrigo Bentancur whose shot was blocked in front of goal whilst Giorgio Chiellini's thumping header from a subsequent corner was well kept out by Samir Handanovic.

Juve were surprisingly sloppy again at the start of the second half as Miralem Pjanic played a dangerous ball across the face of his own box and Blaise Matuidi's touch went straight into the path of Politano but Leonardo Bonucci made a crucial block.

The hosts woke themselves up again and managed to make the breakthrough just after the hour mark. Cancelo got to the byline down the left and managed to dig out an excellent cross for Mandzukic who overpowered Kwadwo Asamoah at the back-post to head home.

Inter were forced to chase the game in the closing stages and had a lot of the ball but failed to create any real chances as the Old Lady shut down the contest. There weren't about to be any more mistakes at the back.

Summary

Juventus were a bit sloppy at times but they eventually got their act together and had the game under control after the goal. That's 14 wins and a draw from 15 games in Serie A, with both potential title rivals beaten. There doesn't seem to be any stopping Allegri's men. Lucian Spaletti will have regrets about his side's performance. Inter had some very presentable opportunities and against the dominant champions, they simply had to take at least one of them. It wasn't to be though and the Nerazzurri were tamed quite easily in the second half.
