Game Report

Highlights

Brighton made the perfect start under new manager Graham Potter as they swept aside a below-par Watford. New boy Neal Maupay also scored on his debut coming in what was a good day all round for the Seagulls.

Detail

After a shaky start Brighton soon settled and were a threat, providing plenty of width on the flanks through wing-backs Montoya and March.

The Seagulls positivity was rewarded on 28 minutes. A sloppy own goal from Doucoure, turning in a Pascal Gross cross-shot after new Watford defender Dawson had originally given possession away.

Watford struggled to make any real impact as they looked to get back into the game. A Femenia header across the six-yard box cleared by Duffy the closest they came before the break.

Watford huffed and puffed early in the second-half but couldn't find a way back. Gray had a shot cleared off the line and appeals for a penalty from a Pereyra free-kick were turned down after a VAR check.

Potter then made a double substitution bringing on Andone and new signing Maupay and they were to have a big impact. First Andone neatly stroked home a Propper cross and then Maupay put the icing on the cake rounding Foster to score after a defence splitting pass from the impressive Dunk.

Summary

Brighton produced a fantastic away performance and were rewarded for their brave attacking display. Time will tell if Potter's more forward thinking style will pay off but yesterday it worked wonders. Watford were seriously off the pace and looked like they were still on their holiday's. This will hopefully be the early wake up call they need.
