Game Report

Highlights

Substitutes made the difference for Southampton in a hard fought victory over ten man Brighton. The Seagulls were depleted for over an hour after Florin Andone's red card and the numerical disadvantage eventually told as Moussa Djenepo and Sofiane Boufal came off the bench to make an impact for the visitors.

Detail

Brighton started the game well and were the dominant side for the first half hour. Leandro Trossard looked lively as he teed up chances for Neal Maupay and Martin Montoya who failed to make the most of them.

The hosts were suddenly reduced to ten men thanks to a rash and unnecessary moment from Andone. The Romanian went in with his studs high on Yan Valery and was shown a deserved straight red card.

Southampton struggled to press home their numerical advantage until the second half when Djenepo came off the bench. The new signing made an instant impact with a stunning finish from outside the box.

The ten men continued to show fighting spirit and they should have equalised from a corner. The ball bounced to Jurgen Locadia who was free in the box but he sliced his volley against the post.

Relief for the visitors as they put the game to bed in stoppage-time thanks to the work of another substitute. Boufal got to the byline and crossed for Nathan Redmond to tap in.

Summary

Brighton managed to stay competitive for long periods despite being down to ten men but were eventually worn down. Fresh legs off the bench were decisive for Southampton against their tiring opponents.
