Game Report

Highlights

Patrick van Aanholt scored in stoppage-time to give Crystal Palace a shock win at Manchester United. The Red Devils thought they'd earned a point after Daniel James' late equaliser but David De Gea's error cost them at the death.

Detail

Manchester United dominated the early stages of the game with sustained periods of possession but struggled to create clear chances. James looked lively and had a decent effort blocked in front of goal.

The visitors took the lead against the run of play with a basic "Route One" goal which exposed the Red Devils' defence. Jeff Schlupp headed on Vicente Guaita's long kick and Jordan Ayew raced onto it to score.

Anthony Martial looked the hosts' most likely source of a route back into the game as he worried the Crystal Palace defence with his pace. Gary Cahill and Martin Kelly were fortunate to get away with fouls on the Frenchman.

The pressure appeared to have paid off for United when Scott McTominay was tripped in the box by Luka Milivojevic. After the controversy from last weekend involving Paul Pogba, it was Marcus Rashford who stepped up but he struck his kick against the post.

The hosts eventually did get the equaliser with a well worked goal. Martial and Rashford combined to tee up James who curled in.

Palace stunned Old Trafford with a late winner on the break. Pogba lost the ball and Van Aanholt combined with Wilfried Zaha before squeezing the ball past De Gea who should've kept it out.

Summary

Manchester United dominated possession but were very ineffective in the final third and errors at the back cost them dearly. Crystal Palace took their rare chances and continue to get big results away from home.
