Game Report

Highlights

Southampton survived the closing stages of the game with ten men to draw with Manchester United. Jannik Vestergaard cancelled out Daniel James' early goal before Kevin Danso saw red but the visitors failed to make their numerical advantage count.

Detail

Southampton started the game aggressively and were pressing high up the pitch to win the ball back. Sofiane Boufal had a decent early effort from distance which fizzed wide.

Manchester United took the lead against the run of play thanks to the individual brilliance of James. The Welshman cut inside from the left and rifled the ball into the far corner for his 3rd goal of the season already.

The visitors were on top after the goal but failed to kill the game off - wasting some decent opportunities before inviting pressure from Southampton in the second half.

The Saints were much improved after the break and got the equaliser they deserved. Danso lofted a cross into the box where Vestergaard beat Victor Lindelof in the air to head home.

Danso sullied his good performance with a needless lunge from behind on Scott McTominay which brought an inevitable second yellow card.

Manchester United pushed for a winner but a combination of solid goalkeeping from Angus Gunn and a lack of conviction from United's forward players meant they had to settle for a point.

Summary

A committed and battling performance from Southampton who worked extremely hard to earn that point. Manchester United perhaps didn't do enough to claim all three and were poor in the final third again.
