Arbroath made a strong impression in League One last season, having won a spot in the playoffs after winning promotion from the fourth tier only a year previous. Matching that achievement will be their aim this time around. Manager Dick Campbell is of the old school, and it is little surprise that he has opted for a highly experienced squad heading into the new season. He has only one player in his ranks younger than 25, which is quite an astonishing statistic. There has been little significant turnover from the squad that was used last season. Attackers Leighton McIntosh and Josh Skelly have been allowed to leave for League One rivals Airdrie and Montrose, but Arbroath were overstocked in the forward areas in any case. Right-back Jason Thomson has arrived from Raith Rovers and will be a starter, though he may be utilised as a wing-back in a 3-5-2 formation if Arbroath go unchanged from last year, which is quite possible. Otherwise, the only big alterations have come in goal, where there has been a complete clear out. Darren Jamieson has joined up from Hamilton and should be the No.1 ahead of the experienced Darren Hill. Arbroath have retained the strength in depth that was so useful for them last season; they may not have the biggest squad, but each of their players is capable of playing a starting role, which could be so important when injuries and suspensions kick in. It also allows them to change things up effectively during games, both in terms of formation and personnel. Their biggest threats, though, are Bobby Linn, who is sometimes overlooked by the manager, and Michael McKenna, who arrived from Berwick midway through last term and was very effective in midfield and attack. If they were unable to make the top four, it would be a significant disappointment as they have invested in their team, which must have an outside chance of winning promotion through the play-offs.

Target

The Red Lichties will be targeting a place in the play-offs following a summer of investment.

Season Review
2018/2019

Champions: Arbroath

Arbroath ran out surprisingly easy winners of League One. Their success was down to the consistency of their players, a strong mental attitude and terrific fortune with regards their selection – there was very rarely a week when manager Dick Campbell had to do without more than one starter, and in the first half of the season particularly they were blessed with being able to name their strongest squad on a weekly basis. It was at the start of the campaign that they made their advantage count. A long undefeated run at the beginning of the season allowed them to get the hop on their rivals. Much of this owed to the quality out wide of Bobby Linn, who finished the campaign as their top scorer with 21 goals. Otherwise, it was a strong team effort, though the contribution of Ryan Wallace both to his side’s build up play and in terms of goal scoring was perhaps undervalued by the staff of the club as they sought to bring in reinforcements in January. Around this time, they started to get a little confused with regards their team selection and their form subsequently dipped. In midfield, it was Gavin Swankie they built around. He was excellent in the first half of the campaign but was another to fade later in the season. A bunch of versatile players, such as Mark Whatley and David Gold, were expert at blocking any gaps when selection concerns did arise, while the defence was redoubtable throughout the season and unsurprisingly finished as the league’s best. Tom O’Brien was their leader in that regard. Looking forward, Arbroath are going to have to improve both the quality and depth of their playing pool, but that promises to be complicated. January signings Luke Donnelly and Greig Spence have not worked out, and it may well be that they need to get these players off their books to allow others to come in. Nevertheless, Campbell is a wily enough manager to allow them to be competitive a league up.
