A season spent in mid-table last season. There was uncertainty at the club after manager Joey Barton’s departure in January but the experienced Simon Grayson took over and steadied the ship. There has been a clear out of the squad over the close season. Some high wage earners have left. Significant departures include ever-present centre-back Connolly, dangerous winger Burns and main striker Vassell. The players brought in are a mix of youth and experience. Clarke, Halliday and Pilkington are individuals with plenty of EFL appearances to their name. Up front Edmondson and Morton failed to really impress during loan spells at Northampton and Lincoln respectively last season but they are young players with potential to improve. The Cod Army are currently under a transfer embargo which means they are not allowed to pay transfer fees for players. This has not restricted Town as they are not currently prepared to pay fees for players. Fleetwood were largely difficult to beat under Grayson last season. Their results did tail off towards the end of the campaign as they lost six of their last 10 matches. They did at times struggle for goals last season and finished as the fourth lowest scorers in the division but conversely they only conceded 46 goals in the 46 league games (the joint fourth lowest total).

Target

Mid-table. Should comfortably be clear of the relegation zone but with the current squad it is hard to see them significantly improving on last season’s 15th place finish.

Season Review
2020/2021

№15: Fleetwood Town

A season spent in mid-table for Fleetwood. The campaign started with Joey Barton in charge, and he led the team to 10th at the turn of the year and a play-off push looked possible. However, Barton left the club in early January after a falling out with the chairman. Form declined under interim boss Simon Wiles but the experienced Simon Grayson then came in and steadied the ship. Performances improved and Town were never in danger of relegation. During Grayson’s tenure so far, Fleetwood have been difficult to play against. They have not scored many goals but also not conceded many. Over the whole season Fleetwood were the fourth lowest scorers but also had the joint fourth best defence. A striker will be a priority signing over the summer. With Kyle Vassell set to return to parent club Rotherham, 22-year-old Gerard Garner is the only senior centre-forward left at the club. He only scored three times in the 17 games he played since breaking into the side in January. Central midfield has been a strength for Fleetwood this season, providing energy and creativity. Jordan Rossiter, Callum Camps, Sam Finley and Dan Batty excelled in this position at points during the campaign. Camps ended up as Fleetwood’s top goal scorer having netted nine in the league. Plenty of ins and outs are expected over the summer but if Grayson can keep the core group of players and add some attacking talent they should be pushing for the play-offs.
