The 2018/19 season will be Huesca’s first ever stint in the top division of Spanish football, after they won promotion by finishing second in last season’s Segunda. With a tiny budget and a small stadium, which isn’t renowned for being all that difficult a place to visit, the team from Aragon are being tipped for relegation. Considering that they’ve lost the coach who won them promotion, it’s fair to say that Huesca will be up against it. Rubi, who led them to last season’s second-place finish, has jumped ship to take over at Espanyol and Huesca have replaced him with their former goalkeeper Leo Franco, who has no experience. This is his first head coaching job. In terms of the Huesca squad, there has been a lot of change this summer, as is normal at a newly promoted club. However, the good news for Huesca is that they’ve been able to keep most of the players who were fundamental to their promotion push, with eight of the 11 most used players from last year still at the club. As well as doing a good job of retaining their promotion heroes, Huesca have brought in some quality in areas of need, mostly via loan deals or free transfers. They’ve acquired the highly rated goalkeeper Axel Werner from Atletico Madrid and experienced left-back Luisinho, as well as talented centre-backs Xabier Etxeita, Pablo Insua and Ruben Semedo – even if there are some concerns over the latter given that he has legal issues and will soon be put on trial. For attack, they’ve signed Samuele Longo – a player who scored 12 goals in 24 Segunda games for Tenerife last season – on loan from Inter. Huesca, then, look to have assembled a competitive squad, but concerns remain over the inexperience of their coach. They have certainly given themselves a chance of avoiding relegation and that’s all their fans could really have hoped for.

Target

As a club about to experience LaLiga for the very first time, the only objective Huesca will have is remaining in the division for a second year.

Season Review
2018/2019

№19: Huesca

This was Huesca’s first ever season in the top division of Spanish football, but their stay in LaLiga only lasted one season as they suffered a relegation that few at the club can have any complaints about. From the sixth round to the last, Huesca were in the relegation zone. After starting the season with four points from their first two matches, they didn’t win again in 2018. That 17-match winless run really cost them as it meant they were already eight points from safety as they entered 2019. Even a change in coach didn’t really help. Leo Franco was replaced by Francisco after eight rounds and Huesca played better under the latter, but results didn’t improve by much. The simple truth is that Huesca’s squad wasn’t good enough. Even when they tried to improve the squad in January by bringing in a little more quality, it still wasn’t enough. There were some talents such as Ezequiel Avila and Cucho, but this wasn’t enough and Huesca went down without too much of a fight. For next season as they try to come back up they’ll need to do so with a new coach after Francisco departed. They’ll also need to build a new squad as many of the players were on short-term deals and are departing too.
