The Highlanders had another fine campaign in both league and cup competitions, but they were never in contention for the Championship title. However, they finished in a highly creditable 2nd place and reached the quarter-finals of the Scottish Cup. With money tight at Inverness, it was no surprise when several senior players departed. Highly capable left-back Carl Tremarco moved to derby rivals Ross County. Striker Jordan White also headed up a division to Motherwell. Shaun Rooney joined St Johnstone while Charlie Trafford headed for Hamilton. Replacements, so far, are not quite the same quality. Striker Shane Sutherland joins form Elgin City and experienced centre-back Danny Devine signed from Dunfermline. Celtic’s Robbie Deas is another centre-back who joins after a successful loan spell at Alloa. Wallace Duffy is a youthful replacement at right-back with Scott Allardice eager to prove himself on his return to the Scottish scene. Late transfer business saw promising Rangers winger Kai Kennedy make a loan move to the Highlands. However, most of the new signings are untested at Championship level. There’s little doubt that Inverness have lost a lot of strength and experience from their squad. The replacements are not quite of the same quality. After seasons of relative success this could be a difficult campaign ahead. Much of their goal threat has gone with Jordan White’s departure. It’s essential that James Keatings remains fit and new striking signing Shane Sutherland starts the season with confidence. Inverness were already in financial difficulty last season and the COVID-19 crisis and lack of gate money will only make matters worse. Under these circumstances, Inverness will struggle to match their performances in recent seasons.

Target

A sustained title challenge with better form away from home. They know they can’t spread themselves too thinly again and may sacrifice cup success for better league form.

Season Review
2020/2021

№5: Inverness CT

Inverness endured a disjointed season and finished in 5th place. They hardly saw any football in January because of freezing or flooded conditions and contended with a very congested fixture list. Despite jovial appearances for the media, manager John Robertson was suffering behind the scenes and was given compassionate leave in February until the end of the season. Neil McCann was installed as interim manager and given the task of reaching the play-offs. Home form was a major problem for Inverness with only 3 wins there all season (W3 D8 L2). Towards the end of the season Inverness seemed on track for the play-offs with a run of 7 matches undefeated, but no wins in their final 4 matches sealed their fate and 5th place. Inverness struggled with injuries for most of the season and that meant supplementing the squad with young and inexperienced players. However, most acquitted themselves well. After being largely ignored by John Robertson, Nikolay Todorov was given his chance by Neil McCann and finished as top scorer with 9 goals. Goalkeeper Mark Ridgers was also in strong form all season and saved Inverness many points. Given their limited resources and difficulty in attracting players to the Highlands, Inverness more than met expectations. With some luck they would have been in the play-offs. With John Robertson now the Sporting Director at Inverness, the manager’s role is vacant. The incoming manager still faces the twin problems of location and lack of money.
