Stadium | Nimes began their playing life at the Stade Jean Bouin. The venue was built in 1919 and was originally known as Parc des Sports or Stade de la rue du Mail. Between 1987 and 1989, the local authority worked on the construction of a new Stadium, a multi-sport centre. From February 1989 the Stade des Costières became their home. The stadium took its name from the area in which it is located and in the early 1990s had a capacity of 29,000. This was eventually reduced to an 18,562 all seater venue. In June 2019, the stadium was sold for 8 million Euros to the President of the club, Rani Assaf. His plan is a complete rebuild by 2025 with a capacity of 15,100. |
Club History | Founded in 1937, Nimes Olympique would achieve professional status immediately. They were a force in French football in the late 1950s and early 1960s. 3 second place finishes and 2 Coupe de France final defeats came about under Kader Firoud. A period of disappointment followed, but with the return of the Algerian coach, they would hit the headlines again. They were runners up once more in 1972 and also featured in Europe. Relegation to Division 2 came about in 1981 and in the early 90s they fell even further to the Championnat National. Even though they were playing in the third tier, Nimes had a great campaign in the Coupe de France 1995-1996 when they lost in the final to Auxerre. The following season they enjoyed their greatest run in Europe reaching the last 16 in the Cup Winners’ Cup. Nimes spent most of the following years in Ligue 2, while briefly falling to the Championnat Naitonal in the late 2000s and early 2010s. The club were involved in a match-fixing scandal in 2014, but were only given a points deduction for their crimes as opposed being relegated to amateur football. In 2018-2019 they made their return to the Ligue 1 after a 25-year absence and finished in the top 10. |
