Real Madrid

In Brief

Real Madrid could secure a record sixth European Super Cup, and will aim to do so with an almost full-strength squad available to Carlo Ancelotti.

Looking Back

Real Madrid recovered seven key players for training, including Jude Bellingham and Kylian Mbappe, only a week before this game, which could influence Carlo Ancelotti's selection choices.

Pre-season hasn't all gone according to plan for Los Blancos, with defeats to AC Milan and Barcelona, as weather complicated fixtures in the US.

Looking Ahead

Carlo Ancelotti has spoken about his belief that the line-up should reflect the team that won the Champions League in June.

The departure of Toni Kroos leaves a gap in midfield, with Jude Bellingham likely to drop deeper into midfield and allow Kylian Mbappé to come into the team in attack.

Eder Militao is now fully fit and looking sharp after missing much of the 2023/24 campaign through injury, so he is likely to take Nacho's place in defence.

Promising young defender Joan Martinez suffered an ACL injury on Friday and will be out for most of the season.

Ancelotti has insisted that Mbappé is fit enough and available to start, and reports this week suggest that his fitness in training could see him given a start in a front three alongside Rodrygo and Vinicius.

David Alaba has been included in the squad symbolically, but is months away from a return and is still yet to train following an ACL injury suffered last season.

Eduardo Camavinga went down screaming in pain in training on Tuesday night and has been ruled out for 6-7 weeks so will miss this game.

Mbappé is expected to start as a central number nine, with Vinícius on the left and Rodrygo on the right.

Manager Comments

“I think those who won the Champions League should play in the final. The only thing is that we are missing two players, Nacho and Kroos.”

"Mbappé can start in the Super Cup, obviously. Jude Bellingham too. They are ready."

“I have a very big problem [choosing who to play in attack]. All summer I have been thinking about who to put in and who not to. It has ruined my holidays.”

“As always, we face this game with excitement and desire. It’s the first title of the season. It’s a very demanding season and we want to start well. But I see the team in good shape, motivated to play a good game.”

In Brief

Europa League defending champions: squad almost untouched. Face Real Madrid without Zaniolo, Toloi, Scalvini and Scamacca. doubtful. Koopmeiners wanting out.

Looking Back

With coach Gasperini still in charge, tried strengthening the squad, while letting go none of their stars, Koopmeiners above all. Zaniolo the main new arrival.

Had a rather forgettable preseason with win over Atalanta Primavera (3-0), draw with AZ Alkmaar (2-2) and defeats to Atalanta B (0-1), Parma (1-4) and FC St Pauli (0-3).

Looking Ahead

Have conceded in all the games played bar 1. Have displayed issues scoring.

Starting centre-back Scalvini is out injured. Back-up Toloi failed to make the squad due to physical issue.

Problems up-front as Key striker Scamacca underwent ACL rupture and will miss out long-term. They hired Retegui at the last minute to replace him. Toure was not selected as he may be on the departure list.

Key attacking midfielder Koopmeiners has an agreement with Juventus and refused to train with the group. Zaniolo sat the last friendly out due to tendon issues, something similar to what kept him out most of the past season: he is out for this one.

Midfielder Sulemana made the squad despite working apart.

One between De Ketelaere and Retegui may end up on the bench, in order to adopt a more cautious approach.

Manager Comments

Can Retegui start right away? "He's ready like everyone else, this is definitely a stimulating match for everyone."

Looman? He's among the players who are in the best shape. Lookman is an important player for us
