Football Season Review

№18: FC Twente

FC Twente's 2017-2018 campaign turned out into a huge disaster as the Enschede outfit finished last, which came as a huge shock for the players, the coaching staff and the fans especially. The 2010 champion already had to deal with financial problems during the last seasons, but the big stadium (fourth biggest in The Netherlands) and the fans provided the Enschede side with confidence. It all went wrong this year though as FC Twente somehow failed to deliver despite a squad that contained well-known names like Oussama Assaidi, Danny Holla and Adam Maher. FC Twente's lack of results put the pressure on the board as well. Manager René Hake had to leave the club during the first half of the season, while his replacement Gertjan Verbeek got sacked later on. Interim-manager Marino Pusic had to prevent the disaster, but the form just wasn't there. Only one win in the last eighteen matches in the Eredivisie proved fatal and it will be extremely tough now to bounce back. The best players will leave this club as a result and the financial restrictions will put the pressure on the Enschede club again. Sealing promotion back to the Eredivisie will be the main goal from now on, but FC Twente can't afford to underestimate the opposition. FC Twente's title in 2010 gave the club a tremendous boost, but the downfall came rather soon. The club will have to start at the beginning again and pushing for a top five classification again in the Eredivisie within a couple of years seems almost like a mission impossible now.
