Football Season Review

№13: Willem II

Willem II had a bit of an average campaign in the Eredivisie this season. There were a few results that stood out, but the danger of ending up in the battle to avoid relegation was almost ever-present. Willem II ensured themselves of another year in the Eredivisie with a few more matches left to play, but coach Erwin van de Looi had already been dismissed by then. The campaign has gone with ups and downs for Willem II. However, the fans were not too happy with the way coach Erwin van de Looi let his team play, too defensive in their opinion. After some disappointing results, Willem II slipped down the ranking table a little bit about halfway the second half of the season and the promotion/relegation play-offs places came closer. The club decided to dismiss Van de Looi and Reinier Robbemond, his former assistant, became the new head coach. He made the most impressive debut by beating PSV Eindhoven 5-0 on home soil. Willem II took full advantage of a complete off-day for the eventual champions. Several more points were collected from the games that followed, as a result of which Willem II finished the season on the 13th spot on the league table. Despite the decent results towards the end of the campaign, Reinier Robbemond will not be the Willem II coach in the new season. Adrie Koster has been signed. It looks likely that several players will leave the club as well, as the contracts of some of them have not been extended, while others played for Willem II on loan from other clubs this season. Fran Sol has become the player of the season. He became the club's top scorer with 16 goals in the Eredivisie, despite having had a tumor removed from his testicle towards the end of the first half of the season. As a result of the good season he has had, it looks likely that he will leave Tilburg to play somewhere else. Another very important player this season was Ben Rienstra, who played for Willem II on loan from AZ Alkmaar. He became the captain at some point and scored several important goals, despite health issues for his son and complications during the birth of his daughter. He especially stood out towards the end of the season by scoring the opening goal in several games.
