Football Season Review

Champions: Ajax

It was an amazing season for the Lancers, almost perfect, they made the home double, winning League and KNVB Cup and, against all odds, reached the Champions League semifinals. A good but not brilliant first part, many resounding victories and just few false steps, but were always runners up behind past seasons champions PSV. In spring the young talents of Ten Hag blossomed, made an incredible long streak of victories surpassing PSV in the last rounds, decisive was the victory over Van Bommel’s side. Their campaign in the national cup was easier, they did not find obstacles and in the final thrashed Willem II. As for Champions League their path was excellent, it was already a success to pass the group stage, then made two miracles eliminating two giants such as Real Madrid and Juventus. They were also one step away from reaching the final, but were condemned by a goal suffered in the last minute of the second leg with Tottenham. Ten Hag proved to be an excellent coach, able to take advantage of the young talents he had at his disposal. Among these emerged De Ligt and De Jong, but excellent was also the season of Tadic (28 goals and Eredivisie top scorer!), Neres, Van de Beek and Zyiech. An explosive attack capable of scoring 119 goals only in Eredivisie. On the other side goalkeeper Onana was sometimes too uncertain, while Tagliafico had a bit too many injuries. De Ligt and De Jong will certainly leave Amsterdam, replace them won’t be that easy.

Player of the Season: Frenkie de Jong
