Football Season Review

№10: Willem II

All in all a good season for the Tricolores even if in the end the outcome was disappointing. Until spring they had built the foundations for an excellent season: an impressive path in KNVB Cup had led them to reach the final and in Eredivisie were well inside the playoff zone to access Europa League. In the last month they threw everything away, were thrashed by Ajax in the Cup's final (a predictable outcome considering the strength of the Lancers) and in the League collected only one point in the last four games slipping out of the playoff zone just in the end. Their season has been very fluctuating, some excellent victories alternated with unexpected defeats, never managing to give continuity to the performances. Perhaps it was the result of the many changes that took place in the winter market, marked in particular by the start of the strongest attacker, the Spaniard Fran Sol (left to Dynamo Kiev) who until that moment had scored 13 goals. Even if they moved well in the transfer campaign, acquiring the services of midfielder Renato Tapia, one of the best in the second half of the season, and of three strikers who did very well, Greeks Vrousai and Pavlidis and especially Swedish Isak (13 goals in few months), coach Adrie Koster has struggled a lot to find the right eleven. Moreover paid the absence for a month of left back Palacios (on international duty) as well as the injury of Koulibaly and especially could never count on talented Donis Avdijaj, put out of the official list for disciplinary reasons. Willem II need only few changes to improve, the problem is that important players such as Tapia and Isak were on loan and will almost certainly leave.
