Football Season Review

№12: VVV-Venlo

Since the arrival of coach Maurice Steijn at the helm of the team, life for VVV Venlo has been a continuous improvement. In fact, in their second Eredivisie season since being promoted from the second flight of the Dutch football, they obtained another safety. This time around they finished on the 12th spot while they had closed the previous campaign on the 15th. The first part of the season actually looked particularly promising for them as, until week 23, they still seemed to be capable of fighting for a place in the Europa League playoffs zone. With the passing of time results got scarcer and they eventually had to content themselves with a quiet salvation. VVV Venlo were not particularly bright offensively, as they only managed to score 47 goals overall, but they held a solid defence during the first part of the campaign, conceding 24 goals. Things got worse in the second part, possibly due to Jerold Promes's longlasting injury, and they went on being pierced 39 times more. Next season, coach Steijn will be in charge for the 6th time in a row and he will be asked to make another miracle. It will not be easy, though, especially considering that the whole attack will have to be renewed with Jay-Roy Grot, Peniel Mlapa and Patrick Joosten, responsible for 27 goals and 12 assists overall, all set to quit.
