Football Season Review

№15: Fortuna Sittard

Considering that Fortuna Sittard was a newly promoted team, and therefore had as its main objective to avoid relegation, the season can be considered positive. Despite this, something more was expected, above all to avoid certain humiliating defeats. Yet the first half of the season had not been so negative, but with the new year arrived many defeats that led them to fight to the end to avoid relegation, a goal achieved with a bit of luck having lost the last three games. Coach René Eijer has always maintained the 4-3-3 as a game system, a method that has partially worked for the attack, but surely the same cannot be said for the defense which was by far the worst in the league with 80 goals suffered. In the winter transfer market they tried to make up for it, but the players took all disappointed expectations, starting with the talented midfielder Balic, but also Syhre and Dembelè did not give the expected contribution. In addition, there have been many injuries to complicate matters, in particular that of captain Demmers who played only in the first part of the season, but also Vlijeter and Dianessy never played. As for the positive notes, good was the season of midfielder Jose Rodriguez, sometimes also used as a central defender. Not bad also the contribution given by Novakovich (the team's best scorer with 9 goals) as well as the one of Diemers and Lamprou (7 goals each).
