Football Season Review

№2: PSV Eindhoven

PSV seemed bound to retain the Eredivisie title also in the current season thanks to a perfect start,16 wins and just 1 defeat. Problems started arising at the beginning of the second half of the campaign, though, as they drew 4 out of the first 6, thus letting Ajax overtake them at the top in week 29 due to a worse goal difference. A defeat in week 33 saw the end of their title dreams. Coach Mark Van Bommell, a debutant at the helm of the Eindhoven side, cannot be happy for the way things went also in the other competitions as they were defeated by Feyenoord in the Johann Cruyff Schaal, did not make it past the Champions League Group stage and lost to RKC Waalwijk, an Eerste Divisie team, in the second round of the KNVB Cup. PSV were the best hosts of the Eredivisie, having won all the games but 1, a draw to Feyenoord, and held the best defence, having conceded 26 goals. They also lost only 3 games, less than any other contenders, but they lost away to all the other three top 4 sides, Ajax, AZ and Feyenoord. Luuk De Jong was the top scorer of the Eredivisie with 28 goals while Steven Bergwijn was the third best assistman with 12. Bergwijn and Hirving Lozano are set to quit Eindhoven over the summer for plenty of cash but PSV have plenty of young and promising players ready to replace them and to fight for the title.
