Football Season Review

Champions: PSV Eindhoven

PSV Eindhoven's 2017-2018 season turned out into a huge success as Phillip Cocu's men managed to seal the 24th Eredivisie title in the club's history, their tenth title since 2000. The Eindhoven outfit didn't produce the most entertaining football this year, but the consistency was there, which was their main strength. The home form especially was impressive and crucial as PSV managed to stay unbeaten in the own Philips Stadium. They only dropped four points in front of the own crowd. Ajax definitely put pressure on PSV during the final months of the campaign and a 3-0 defeat in Amsterdam and a 3-3 draw on the road against FC Groningen towards the end of 2017 provided Ajax with the chance to push for glory as well, but PSV's campaign after the winter break earned PSV the title. A 5-0 defeat on the road against Willem II definitely shook things up, but the Eindhoven side responded by recording four wins in a row. Crucial victories over AZ Alkmaar and Ajax proved to be enough to seal the deal. It will be a busy summer now for PSV as key players like Marco van Ginkel, Jeroen Zoet and Santiago Arias are expected to leave Eindhoven. There will be a budget to respond, but it will be difficult to maintain the quality within the squad. This season gave the club a tremendous boost though and repeating the achievements next year will be the main mission from now on. The Champions League will be something to look forward to as well.
