Football Season Review

№10: SC Freiburg

It was another solid campaign for Freiburg under the guidance of long-term coach Christian Streich. Although they didn't quite hit the heights of the previous year, a tenth placed finish can't be sniffed at, given they lost some of their best players in the summer. It was a difficult start to the season for Freiburg, despite an opening day victory at Stuttgart, they failed to win any of the 9 games that followed. Defensively they struggled and the loss of form to regular midfielder Hofler was also a factor. The team eventually found their rhythm in December and 5 straight victories moved them up to 8th in the table. Unfortunately for Freiburg that was to be as high as they were to get as consistency became a problem in the second-half of the campaign.  Freiburg were certainly entertaining to watch and goals were often on the menu. They ended the season scoring and conceding 52 goals. Record signing Santamaria eventually settled and put in some good performances, while Grifo and Sallai proved to be hits going forward. Gunter also put in some strong display's at left-back. It is likely to be more of the same from Freiburg next term but obviously this is dependent on any transfer activity in the summer, one thing is for sure, under the helm of experienced coach Streich, they will again compete.

Player of the Season: Vincenzo Grifo
