Football Season Review

№10: Sirius

Sirius were the surprise package of the 2020 season but slumped to 8th place by the finish. The unfancied team remained in top three contention until the final stretch when the failed to win any of their last 8 matches. Only 2 defeats in their opening 10 matches (W4 D4 L2) set them up for an exciting season. Opponents failed to deal with the pace and flair of their exciting 3-4-2-1 formation, with Vecchia the standout star. By mid-season they stuck around 6th place with hopes of European football. However, they faded after that as teams learnt to negate their counter-attacking style. Jonsson dominated the goalkeeping position for most of the season with 24 starts. Despite their defence being settled with Bjorkstrom, Bjornstrom, Ekdal and Larson playing nearly every fixture, they conceded 51 goals – the 2nd worst in the Allsvenskan. They were settled in midfield too with Anderson, Hellborg, Netabay, and Shabani all making 24 or more appearances. Roche at 19 years made his breakthrough with 18 appearances. The attacking trio of Saeid, Sugita and Vecchia were used for almost the entire season. They scored 26 goals between them, with the majority in the first half of the season. Vecchia was in unstoppable early-season form and eventually scored 12 goals, but it wasn’t enough to earn a call into the Sweden squad. Overall Sirius will be happy with 2020 despite the poor ending. They were looking up instead of looking down. Can they keep it going? Vecchia seems likely to move on so 2021 could be more difficult for Sirius.
