Football Season Review

№15: SV Sandhausen

Sandhausen went through very turbulent season that saw 2 managers being sacked before eventually late push saw the team avoiding bottom 3 finish by a single point. The summer was promising with the arrivals of Nartey and Keita-Ruel seen as great moves. Sandhausen also opened the campaign with 4-game unbeaten run at home (W2 D2), but they lost all of their opening 4 away matches and come November Uwe Koschinat was sacked. Michael Schiele took his place, but the new manager changed the personnel and the tactics too dramatically and he lost 5 of his first 6 games in charge to put Sandhausen in the bottom 2 come January. All season the big issues were on the road with Sandhausen ending up having the worst away record in the entire league! Schiele continued to pick the wrong players and tactics and after defeat in round 21 he was sacked too, with the ex-Sandhausen captain Kulovits appointed as interim coach for the rest of the season. Knowing the players well Kulovits eventually brought the positive change needed and 3 consecutive wins, all at home, in April proved decisive to at least give Sandhausen hope of survival. It all went to the last round with Sandhausen sitting a point above the bottom 3. Despite away defeat vs. Bochum their main rivals lost too and that’s why White and Blacks stayed in the division. Kulovits is now likely to get the job permanently, but he will have to be very creative as there are no money for major transfers and the only goal for next season will be again survival. Need at least 3-4 quality new signings if they are to stay out of trouble.
