Football Season Review

№12: Erzgebirge Aue

Erzgebirge had very quiet season as they enjoyed mid-table comfort all the way, but never got close enough to the top 3. It was mute transfer activity in the summer with the team’s finances hit badly by COVID. Still, star strikers Kruger and Testroet stayed put, with their goals crucial for the pretty solid campaign. Only 2 defeats in the first 9 rounds (W4 D3) quickly established Erzgebirge in the middle of the table and, with the home form remaining solid enough, the Violets never dropped lower than 13th during the season. Safety was guaranteed very early with back-to-back wins at the end of January opening huge lead over the bottom 3 and explaining why in the final few months of the season the form declined with the motivation dropping too. Erzgebirge played with desire and great use of both flanks in this campaign and undoubtedly their main strength were the forward actions where veteran Testroet and youngster Kruger formed great partnership. They were officially the most effective attacking pair in the division after assisting each other for 14 goals. The financial situation of the club kept declining, though, and the zero winter singings clearly show that. The club’s owner already announced that there are no money and that next season some of the stars might have to be sold, with Erzgebirge set to rely mainly on youth and loanees. All this suggests that the only goal in 2021/22 will be to stay in the division, but this will all depend on which and how many of the regulars will leave this summer.

Player of the Season: Pascal Testroet
