Annan finished last season in 3rd place, but then painful play-off experience followed. Despite ultimate disappointment the season was good and only runaway winners Kelty Hearts scored more than Annan’s 64 goals. Increased the squad depth in the summer without making too many changes – only 5 departures compared to 7 new signings. The most important player to leave was playmaker Moxon. All other departures not hugely important players. From the new signings, defender Hooper and striker Muir the most likely ones to become regulars. Wingers Galloway and Cook also seen as good signings, but they will have very stiff competition for playing time. Coach Murphy set to continue with his favourite 4-4-2 formation, but at least at home this looks more like 4-2-4 as the wide players are encouraged to attack. Winger Wallace was last season’s top scorer (13 goals) and he should be major threat again. Main striker Goss should be partnered with Muir or Smith in most matches. In defence captain Swinglehurst will be key figure. Meanwhile, after Moxon’s departure Docherty will be even more important as the creative engine in midfield. Aggressive forward actions, potent strikers and very deep squad are all factors that make Annan’s fans feel very optimistic for the season ahead. The one area seen as potential weakness is the goalkeeper’s position. 36-year-old Fleming showed signs of decline last season, with the alternatives being the even older Connolly (41) and 17-year-old Mitchell.

Target
