Having immediately fallen back to Serie B after their first Serie A season ever, in 2017/2018, Benevento proved capable of achieving promotion again to the top flight of Italian football at the second time of asking, and they did it in style. The past campaign in fact was a triumphant one for coach Filippo Inzaghi and his boys, who held the best attack and best defence in the league with 67 goals scored and 27 conceded respectively, had the longest positive run, from week 10 to 31, and secured promotion with a 7-game advance. This was certainly a great result for the oldest Inzaghi brother, who can thus return to Serie A for the third time in his coaching career, having had a mixed experience in his debut with Milan and a disastrous one with Bologna 2 years ago. The squad he had at his disposal was a very experienced one with an age average of 28.2 as many of his boys had already played or even had careers at the top. However, over the summer, the management tried to add both quality and quantity to all departments. Having lost only forward Coda, who had contributed to their promotion with 7 goals and 2 assists, they signed Lapadula, who is a prolific striker but too injury-prone. Moreover, they also added Caprari, a winger who can occasionally act as a false nine. Muscle was added at the back with Glik arriving from Monaco, while Ionita and Dabo will provide Inzaghi with more options in a midfield adaptable to different solutions. Besides that, and keeping most of the stars from the past campaign, like playmaker Viola (9 goals and 6 assists) and forwards Sau (13 goals and 7 assists) and Roberto Insigne (8 goals and 5 assists), Benevento are still looking for at least a couple of wingers, a centre-forward and a midfielder. Gervinho, Cornelius and Llorente are all in their wish list.
