Cambridge United endured a tough season last time out with head coach Colin Calderwood just about keeping their heads above water. This summer has been even tougher with several influential players leaving the Abbey Stadium for pastures new. Creative midfielder Jevani Brown’s departure for League 2 rivals Colchester United is a real psychological blow. It follows fellow playmaker George Maris, full-back Brad Halliday and winger David Amoo’s decisions to reject new deals. The U’s struggled for goals last season, with their leading goalscorer finishing with just eight goals having left in January and Calderwood now faces a real challenge to replace both the creativity and goals which have been lost during the summer. Whilst midfielder Luke Hannatt brings plenty of potential with him following his arrival from Port Vale; former Aston Villa striker Harvey Knibbs has no Football League experience and represents something of a gamble. Goalkeeper Callum Burton and full-back Kyle Knoyle have also signed but as it stands the squad looks short of the quality which will be needed to be competitive in League 2. August is likely to be a pivotal month for both Calderwood and the U’s as they look to avoid a battle for their Football status.
