Northampton Town will be looking to make some progress following two disappointing campaigns. Keith Curle steadied the ship following relegation from League One under Dean Austin. Curle was a pragmatic appointment and much-needed after the gamble on Austin failed to come off. The former England international defender’s managerial style is certainly unorthodox and that has been all-too apparent this summer as he allowed several of last season’s first-team regulars to leave the club. Midfielder John-Joe O’Toole’s departure was no surprise but not offering midfielder Sam Foley will have raised some eyebrows. The biggest disappointment was defender Aaron Pierre’s move to Shrewsbury Town for an undisclosed fee. Whilst Charlie Goode’s loan move has been made permanent, Curle will still need to find a replacement for Pierre. The standout capture is undoubtedly winger Nicky Adams, who returns for his second spell at the Sixfields Stadium after winning promotion at Bury. Striker Harry Smith will have plenty to prove after signing for an undisclosed fee from Macclesfield Town. Midfielder Alan McCormick could be a shrewd addition if he can stay fit. Curle has now had the chance to build his own squad but his unique approach can often be as much a hindrance as a help.

Target

Play-offs. Curle will be expected to have his new-look side challenging for a play-off place and they should go close.
