It was a desperate end to the season for Plymouth Argyle, whose second-half slump saw them relegated from League One on the final day of the season. They were just three minutes away from safety but a winner from Southend United at home to Sunderland saw them slip through the trap door on goal difference. The penultimate weekend had seen them thrashed at Accrington Stanley and led to the acrimonious departure of Derek Adams. It was a sad end to an otherwise successful four-year reign at Home Park. Ryan Lowe escaped the chaos at imploding Bury to take over as manager this summer but has had to deal with the departure of several influential players. The biggest loss is undoubtedly midfielder playmaker Graham Carey, who opted for a move to CSKA Sofia. Defender Ryan Edwards headed for Blackpool whilst Portugese midfielder Ruben Lameiras returned home to FC Famalicao. Striker and leading goalscorer Freddie Ladapo signed for Rotherham United for an undisclosed fee. Lowe will be able to use some of that money to rebuild the squad and it is perhaps no surprise he has returned to former club Bury for their standout performer Danny Mayor, beating off Ipswich Town for his signature. Another four former Shakers have made the move down to Devon as Lowe faces a busy August in the transfer market.

Target

Play-offs. Automatic promotion seems a little unrealistic given the wholesale changes this summer but Lowe should have them fighting for a top-seven finish.
