Charlton are coming from a frustrating 2017/18 season that saw them endure plenty of off-field drama but still manage to make the play-offs, where they were beaten by Shrewsbury. The Addics' mid-term goal is to return to the Premier League, where they spent the majority of the first decade of the current century, but their recent attempts to return to the Championship have ended in frustration, with last season being overshadowed by uncertainty regarding the club ownership and a lack of transfer funds, which caused Karl Robinson to resign. Lee Bowyer took over as caretaker and guided the Addics into the play-offs and still remains in charge, despite still having the "caretaker" tag in his job description. The Addics have lost far more players than they have signed, with Josh Magennis, Ezri Konsa and Ahmed Kashi being the most important players that have left. Two new signings were made in Lyle Taylor and Darren Pratley, while Igor Vetokele returns after spending the last two years away on loans and has participated in the pre-season games. A prolific scorer even at Championship level, Vetokele will prove a real asset, providing that he does end up staying. There are plenty of things for the Addics to worry about at the moment, with Josh Magennis reportedly being on his way out of the club, while Tariqe Fosu-Henry is reportedly still struggling with the injury issues that caused him to miss the majority of the second half of the previous season. Despite these news, Charlton certainly have one of the best squads in the division and will once again be aiming high.
