The atmosphere surrounding Coventry was vitriolic following their relegation to League Two at the end of the 2016/17 season, with their fans often citing the fact that the Sky Blues had not finished inside the top half of a league since 1970. A continuation of this tradition would have meant that Coventry were set for an extended stay in the fourth tier, but Mark Robins had different plans and guided his side back to League One at the first time of asking. Promotion did not come without drama, as Coventry needed to book their return to the third tier via the play-offs but, despite finishing the lowest out of all the newly-promoted sides, the Addics will enter the season with plenty of optimism, as they are one of the biggest clubs in this league and have used their pulling power to its maximum. The sole real blow that they suffered during the summer transfer window was the departure of star striker Marc McNulty, who was snapped up by Reading. However, they brought in an able replacement in Jonson Clarke-Harris, while bringing in several other new players, with the size and stature of their club best illustrated by the facts that they managed to sign two players from last season's surprise package Shrewsbury in Junior Brown and Abu Ogogo. The Sky Blues certainly look well equipped for their season of return to the third third, as they have an experienced manager in charge of a squad littered by proven League One quality.
