Karlsruher are turning a new chapter in their existence after several successful seasons under Kauczinski and for the new campaign the Blues will be led by Thomas Oral. This was a known fact ever since February and from very early on the gaffer was able to observe his new players. He arrives after seeing his last team FSV relegated in May and the manager definitely needs to prove himself quickly or the pressure will start mounting. Karlsruher were not close to a promotion, unlike two seasons ago, but the compact squad suggests that the Blues have enough in themselves to be a top eight team. The new gaffer seems happy to keep the 4-2-3-1 formation, but after the departure of two centre-backs and his highest profile inner midfielder he had to do some shopping himself. Oral’s latest signing was Jordi Figueras and he is tipped to be Stoll’s new partner in the heart of the defence. Thoelke might have something to say about that though as he had very solid spring when starting for the first time in ten consecutive matches. The two other major reinforcements that were signed were that of defensive midfielder Kom and of the aggressive winger Stoppelkamp. The latter is expected to operate down the left wing, with Torres on the other flank and Yamada behind the lone striker Diamantakos. The Greek made his move permanent this summer and after scoring six goals in ten matches in the spring he is expected to do even better this year. The obvious problem that can be seen is that Diamantakos doesn’t have cover and outside inexperienced youngsters Manzon and Vujinovic there are no other typical centre forwards in the squad. Oral is still looking for a striker and he most probably will be able to find someone before the end of August, but at least in the first few rounds Diamantakos’ health will be vital. Krebs, Promel and Kom will be competing for the two starting slots just in front of the defence and in general Karlsruher have healthy competition for places in every position, apart from the number nine. The Blues will be led by a manager that failed last season and despite the good atmosphere achieving promotion seems to be beyond them at the minute.

Target

Mid-table finish is where Karlsruher are expected to be found and the new gaffer is given the target to achieve a top six position if possible.
