Mechelen managed to complete an instant return to the top-flight after a dramatic win over Beerschot-Wilrijk in a play-off clash back in March, a deserved reward for playing some superb football over the year and maintaining their quality. But they pulled off an even bigger triumph in the Belgian Cup where they secured a shock 2:1 win against Gent and lifted the trophy. Yet, all this success has been clouded by constant shadow of match-fixing allegations, with the threat of being denied an entry into the top-division very real. However, the Red and Yellow eventually got their place confirmed just two weeks before the start of the season and can plan ahead with more confidence. That has had a negative impact on recruitment as Wouter Vrancken has so far been unable to really strengthen the squad from last season. Thankfully for him, not too many departures have taken place too and the squad remains intact. However, new additions are definitely needed if Mechelen are to steer clear of danger as the depth at the moment is insufficient and the team lacks a bit of cutting edge in attack. On the other hand, Mechelen can start the season with real momentum and feel-good factor after such a strong last season and a settled starting 11.
