In 2023/2024, at the end of a 10-year tenure, Sassuolo waved the Serie A goodbye but, last season, they obtained promotion back to the top flight of Italian football at the first time of asking. They started the season slowly, winning only 1 out of the initial 4 games, but then they started running and, by the end of November, they settled themselves at the top of the table and triumphally marched towards promotion, slowing their rhythm down in the final 3 weeks. Having hardly touched the squad that got relegated, last season Sassuolo were by far superior to all the opponents and, not surprisingly led almost all the statistics, most goals scored, most points obtained at home and away, most wins and least defeats, while they only held the 3rd-best defence of the league. Coach Fabio Grosso, the architect of their success, was thus confirmed at the helm also for the new season, although his sole Serie A experience at Brescia a few years ago lasted 3 weeks only. Sassuolo have been quite active in the transfer campaign and first dedicated all their efforts in strengthening their defence. With Starting goalie Moldovan back to his parent club and long-time serving Consigli released, they saw Turati's return from Monza and he is set to become the new n.1 with Muric, arriving from Ipswich Town, as his back-up. Starting right-back Toljan left for Levante and Walukiewicz, on loan from Torino, should thus become the new starter. Back-up centre-back Lovato returned to his parent club while starting Muharemovic was signed permanently but he will step back to the bench with new-comers Candè and Idzes, arriving from Venezia, likely to start. The midfield saw captain Obiang leaving for Monza whilst Kone arrived on loan from Olympique Marseille and could become a protagonist in the new season. More strengthening is required in the area. The attack, which relied almost exclusively on 23-year-old striker Mulattieri, will now be able to count also on Pinamonti, returning from a positive loan at Genoa. Winger Fadera could also become a protagonist especially if Laurientè quit for pastures new. More has to be done in this area too.

A quiet salvation.
