Aston Villa

Last updated: Sat 24 August 2019 00:53
In Brief

Not the planned start to season, back-to-back defeats. Captain Chester long-term absentee. Hause passed fit, but Kodjia unavailable.

Looking Back

Villains suffered second consecutive defeat when losing 1:2 at home vs. Bournemouth. Again the big issues in defence, with 5 goals already conceded in 2 games.

Going forward look dangerous, but at the back things have been very poor in opening 2 rounds and improvement needed promptly.

Looking Ahead

Coach Smith certain to be considering changes in defence. Targett pushing for start at left-back, but options for heart of defence limited – captain Chester still in rehabilitation. At least Hause passed fit after missing first 2 rounds.

Kodjia failed late fitness test and will sit out, but in attack Villa have rich options and in general the forward players performing well so far.

Points of Interest

Without home draw in official match since early February – 7 wins and 3 defeats.

Everton

Last updated: Sat 24 August 2019 00:53
In Brief

Solid opening 2 games and back-to-back clean sheets grew confidence. Delph remains out, but Digne passed fit. Schneiderlin back after ban.

Looking Back

Early Bernard goal enough for Everton to win opening home game of season – 1:0 vs. Watford. Once again Toffees looked rock solid and they are yet to concede after 2 rounds.

Also ended last season in impressive form at the back, only Man City and Liverpool have conceded fewer goals in 2019.

Looking Ahead

Coach Silva has Schneiderlin back from ban, but Gbamin had very solid full debut last weekend and hoping to continue in double six role next to Gomes.

Delph started new season injured and still unavailable. Digne taken off limping last weekend, but it proved nothing serious and he is set to play.

Concerns remain about the centre forward role and after 2 uninspiring starts from Calvert-Lewin now Kean could be considered.

Points of Interest

Richarlison used on right wing in first 2 games, he was mainly operating down left flank and as false nine last season, with Brazilian ineffective in this new role so far.
