Standard Liege took the lead twice in the first part through Maxime Lestienne and Duje Cop but Rangers managed to equalise, first through Connor Goldson and then with James Tavernier's penalty just before the break. The Gers completed their comeback just after the hour mark when Scott Arfield made it 3-2 for the hosts.
In a game that was played behind closed doors, Standard Liege surprised the Rangers by taking the lead through Lestienne just six minutes into the game.
Rangers struggled to create in attack in the first half an hour when the visitors looked comfortable on the ptich, defending their one-goal lead.
A crazy last stretch of the first half followed, as Goldson equalised but it took Cop less than a minute to restore the visitors lead.
Rangers reacted after conceding the second and pushed for a leveller. They were lucky to net a timely goal when Lestienne handled the ball and gave Tavernier the chance to convert from the spot just before the break.
Despite conceding before half-time, Standard Liege hit the ground running and pinned Rangers back to their box in the first minutes of the second part.
The visitors missed a couple of chances to take back the lead, Rangers started growing into the game and Arfield put them ahead after the hour mark.
Standard Liege collaped and could have considered another goal had Arnaud Bodart not produced some great saves in the remaining minutes.
Standard Liege put in a great effort here but Rangers deserved all three points as they were superior for the largest part of the game and reacted instantly after conceding just before the break.
