Game Report

Highlights

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was unlucky to hit the post twice, but Villarreal looked comfortable for the largest part of the game and managed to grab a 0-0 draw, which secured them qualification to the final.

Detail

Villarreal were in control of the game in the first part. They didn't create any clear chances, but dictated the tempo in midfield and looked comfortable on the pitch.

Arsenal struggled to find a final pass in attack in the first half, but came closer than Villarreal to taking the lead when Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang hit the post.

Arsenal hit the ground running after the break and wasted two big chances to open the scoring through Nicolas Pepe and Emile Smith Rowe.

But Villarreal grew into the game, tried to threaten from dead balls and kept Arsenal away from their box, keeping them busy in defence.

Aubameyang hit the post again, as Arsenal freshened up their attack, played with two strikers upfront and piled the pressure on Villarreal in the remaining minutes.

But Villarreal defended well, didn't let Arsenal create much danger in front of their goal in the last 20 minutes, clinched the draw and secured qualification to the Europa League final.

Summary

Arsenal may have deserved to score at least one goal here, as they were unlucky to hit the post twice. Villarreal hardly threatened the Arsenal goal throughout the match, as they prioritised keeping a clean sheet over attacking to grab a goal.
