Game Report

Highlights

Inter Milan's Champions League hopes will rest on the final day of the season after they were destroyed in Naples. Piotr Zielinski's scorcher broke the deadlock and Napoli ran riot in the second half with a Dries Mertens header and Fabian Ruiz brace.

Detail

A win for Inter would seal their place in the Champions League but they were sloppy in the early stages. Kwadwo Asamoah gave the ball away cheaply in his own half and was punished instantly by Zielinski whose rocket of a shot found the top corner.

Despite having nothing to play for, Napoli were the dangerous looking side overall in the first half. Meanwhile, the visitors lacked the aggression and spark in the final third that they needed.

Lucian Spalletti had seen enough and brought on Mauro Icardi at half-time to partner Lautaro Martinez up front. It didn't have the desired effect as Inter remained blunt in attack.

It was the home side who stepped their game up in the second half and produced some ruthless finishing. Mertens got between two defenders to head in Jose Callejon's cross.

The Nerazzurri tried to press forward in the closing stages but were picked apart defensively - with Fabian helping himself to a couple of goals. Icardi's late penalty was inconsequential.

Summary

Excellent performance from Napoli who showed the full extend of their attacking capabilities - a positive sign for next season. Inter Milan were meek when they needed to get a result and they can't afford that in their final game against Empoli.
