Game Report

Highlights

Crystal Palace couldn't make their numerical advantage count as ten-man Everton held on for a goalless draw at Selhurst Park on the opening day.

Detail

The Toffees started the brighter and should have been in front after only two minutes, Sigurdsson missing the target when he should really have scored.

The lack of goals in pre-season seemed to be continuing for Everton as they spurned two more opportunities, Coleman and Calvert-Lewin both going close.

Palace improved as the half wore on and went into the break on top. Everton were forced into a change as influential midfielder Andre Gomes came off with an ankle injury.

Palace hadn't created an awful lot going forward but second-half they upped the tempo. Jordan Pickford was called into action twice in as many minutes, keeping out both Ayew and Meyer.

Everton's Morgan Schneiderlin was then sent-off for a second bookable offence with 15 minutes remaining and despite the introduction of wantaway forward Wilfried Zaha, Palace were unable to find a winner.

Summary

Crystal Palace will be disappointed not have won the game especially with Everton going down to ten men, the lack of firepower could be a problem again this season. It is understandable why Everton were chasing Zaha in the summer as they too could struggle to find the net this term but will be happy not to have lost this game in the end.
