Game Report

Highlights

Manchester United romped to victory on the opening day in what turned out to be a comfortable afternoon. Chelsea had their chances twice hitting the woodwork but United grew stronger in the second-half and opened up the Blues defence at will.

Detail

The early stages were a surprisingly open affair with Chelsea looking dangerous going forward. Tammy Abraham rifled the ball against the frame of the goal as United rode their luck.

As good as Chelsea were going forward they shot themselves in the foot defensively. Zouma needlessly brought down Rashford in the box and he duly converted the spot-kick to give United the lead.

Chelsea continued to look a threat going forward and were unfortunate to go in at the break behind. Emerson crashed an effort against the bar after finding himself free in the box.

The Red Devils improved in the second period and blew Chelsea away with 2 quick-fire goals. First Martial poked home a Pereira cross before Pogba's defence splitting pass found Rashford who slotted past Kepa.

Chelsea continued to plug away but their vulnerable defence was made to pay again as substitute youngster Daniel James' deflected effort made it 4-0.

Summary

The scoreline may have flattered Manchester United slightly but the confidence grew in the team as the game went on. They also looked more assured defensively in the second-half after being far too open in the first. Chelsea were lackluster at the back and were made to pay for being wasteful in front of goal, Frank Lampard has his work cut out on this showing.
